President Johnson Receiving Architect Delegation

This photograph was taken by Joseph J. Scherschel on June 15, 1965. It shows President Lyndon B. Johnson in the Cabinet Room receiving the American Institute of Architects delegation and the Pan-American Congress of Architects delegation. The delegates are awarding President Johnson with a certificate which celebrates his accomplishments in preserving the beauty of the United States. The American Institute of Architects delegation consisted of: Arthur G. Odell Jr., Rex W. Allen, Hugh Stubbins, Oswald Thorson, Robert F. Hastings, Wm. H. Scheick, and Henry L. Wright. The Pan-American Congress of Architects delegation consisted of Samuel L. Cooper, Frederico Ugarte, Horatio Navarette, Gustavo Wallis, Jaime Marques, and Charles Horsky. The American Institute of Architects was founded in 1857 as a professional organization for architects. The first Pan-American Architect Congress was held in 1920 in Uruguay. Both organizations promoted cooperation across industry and country borders.
